Modern technologies significantly facilitate and promote the participation of citizens in democratic societies in various ways ****. The internet, in particular, has filled the gap between civil society and political institutions, allowing for more active involvement of citizens in decision-making at various policy levels. This is achieved through what is often termed e-democracy, which refers to the use of new information and communication technologies (ICT) to increase citizen participation in democratic institutions.

Our analysis will use as example and testbed the European democratic sphere (any references to European refer to the narrower definition of the EU) as we believe that it is of the few democratic ecosystems that safeguards democratic participation and actively promotes it whilst posing also as one of the major global players.
