An excellent example of how the use of Data can help to alleviate and solve urban challenges. In the April 2024 issue of Nomopress we talked about how Open Data can be a catalyst for the solution of Urban Challenges. In the case of “Periopsis”, a spin-off startup of the CYENS centre of excellence used satellite imagery and machine learning algorithms to identify rubbish tips in some Municipalities of Cyprus.
This can be only the beginning. Such satellite imagery can also be used to identify choke-points in urban mobility, pinpoint areas prone to flooding, and even monitor deforestation or coastal erosion. By integrating these tools with existing urban infrastructure and transport networks, municipalities can make data-driven decisions to optimize traffic flows, reduce congestion, and enhance public safety.
With the effective use and application of the provisions of the “Open-Data” directive, more applications could be found and more startups could spur up and provide applications that can be valuable for local and national authorities. Open data ecosystems allow developers, companies, and researchers to access real-time information, encouraging innovation that addresses complex urban challenges such as waste management, resource allocation, and environmental protection.
All in all, the combination of advanced technologies like machine learning, satellite imagery, and open data initiatives represents a powerful avenue for fostering smart cities. By embracing these tools, Cyprus could lead the way in creating cleaner, safer, and more efficient urban environments, paving the way for scalable solutions that can be applied globally.
